Team1 Japan is officially here.
Our mission is to build a Japanese builder community that matches the scale of Japan’s institutional adoption.
Here is what that means, and why Japan’s builder scene is unique.
The sequence is backwards, and that’s the opportunity
Japan’s institutions have already made their choice.
Progmat, the platform behind the majority of the country’s security token issuance, moved billions in tokenized real estate and corporate bonds onto a dedicated Avalanche L1. TIS, which processes more than half of Japan’s credit card volume, also launched its own L1. Some of the largest names in Japanese finance are now exploring tokenized government bonds using Avalanche infrastructure.
In most countries, this runs the other way. A community forms, developers experiment, projects ship, and eventually, sometimes years later, institutions notice and follow. Japan skipped the first half.
The chains themselves stay controlled, as Japanese financial regulation requires, but they no longer sit behind a wall. Gateways outward to wallets, to stablecoin settlement, and to applications written by people who were never invited into a private consortium are now being built. Japan’s financial system is no longer a closed circuit. It is growing an edge you can build against.
The demand is real, and the gateways to these platforms are underway.
That’s the gap Team1 Japan is here to close.
What is Team1?
Team1 is a network of builders, developers, creators, event organizers, and community leaders working to grow the Avalanche ecosystem from the ground up. Since launching in 2024, it has grown to hundreds of members across more than 40 countries, with official chapters now live in the USA, Vietnam, India, Türkiye, Brasil, and across LatAm.
Team1 Japan is the newest of those chapters.
Our mandate is focused: connect Japan’s builders to Avalanche, and connect them to each other.
This is a formalization, not a beginning
Japan’s Avalanche community has been meeting for years.
Since April 2023, over 30 events have been held across Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, and Fukuoka with more than 1200 attendees between them. The anchor is Avalanche Gourmet Night, a series running for over two years that marks the beginning of the Avalanche community’s in-person presence
The programming has widened past meetups. Avalanche Academy study sessions have run four times since March, giving developers a recurring technical space rather than a social one. There have been collaborations with Uniswap Labs, zeroone, and Pudgy Penguins, and a workshop for teams who entered the JPYC stablecoin innovation challenge.
What’s live from day one
Team1 Japan starts with a working cadence, not a launch announcement:
A weekly Team1 Japan meeting, from launch week onward. Details on our Luma calendar.
In-person and online events across Oct and Nov, including a community meetup in Tokyo and a builder session for developers who want to deploy on Avalanche.
Expect to see more hyper-focused enterprise and university workshops geared towards enabling builders to realize the projects they want to build.
Looking to get involved?
Team1 members work across three tracks, and all three are open in Japan:
Community. Organizing meetups, running events, welcoming newcomers, making the room feel worth walking into.
Technical. Developer workshops, hackathons, deployment support, helping builders get from an idea to something running on-chain.
Content. Writing, video, design, and translation, telling the Avalanche story in Japanese for a Japanese audience.
Full-time Web3 experience is not a prerequisite. What matters is initiative, follow-through, and a genuine interest in helping the people around you. If you’re a student curious about where to start, a developer evaluating chains, a founder looking for a route to capital and partners, or a creator who wants to work on something with real momentum behind it, there’s a place for you here.
Where this goes
Japan’s institutional footprint on Avalanche will keep growing.
Our job is to make sure that by the time all of that matures, Japan has a builder community deep enough to meet it: one that produces its own projects, its own founders, and its own reasons for the next institution to choose Avalanche.
That community starts now, and it starts with whoever reads this and decides to show up.
Institutions chose Avalanche. Now it’s the builders’ turn.
