Nights of Code is an intensive overnight hackathon that bridges the gap between theoretical tech learning and real-world application, allowing participants to turn ideas into working solutions through hands-on building and collaboration.
As the practical capstone for builder cohorts organized by Team1 Africa, it provides a structured, high-energy environment where participants move quickly from initial concepts to fully deployed, functional applications.
More than a late-night coding session, Nights of Code serves as a launchpad for early-stage projects. It facilitates cross-functional team formation, pairs builders with dedicated technical mentors, and offers hands-on guidance through every development process, from system architecture to product-market fit.
The most recent edition marked the culmination of the four-week Building Gamified Solutions for Businesses cohort. Over the preceding three weeks, participants explored gamification mechanics, modern software architecture, smart contract development, incentive models, and economic system design. The cohort recorded 215 registrations, with 155 active builders participating both in person and virtually.
Nights of Code gave them twelve hours to put that knowledge into action and build real solutions.
The Journey: From Team Formation to Overnight Execution
The goal extended far beyond simple game mechanics. Builders were challenged to apply blockchain architecture to solve real-world business problems, ranging from customer loyalty and retention to tokenized incentive structures and sustained community participation.
The process began with team formation. Developers, UI/UX designers, product thinkers, and marketers joined forces around shared ideas, creating cross-functional teams capable of building end-to-end solutions. Roles were assigned, repositories were configured, and product roadmaps were mapped out.
Before diving into code, teams received targeted guidance from experienced mentors and technical tutors. Specialized sessions on game economy design explored how token dynamics guide user behavior, while workshops on Founder-Market and Product-Market fit encouraged builders to design with real users and business models in mind.
Once building began, the energy transitioned to raw implementation. Smart contracts were designed and deployed on the Avalanche C-Chain, interfaces were wired up, and bugs were resolved in real time with continuous support from table trainers, technical leads, and community managers. By morning, participants had deployed over 40 smart contracts, turning initial ideas into testable, working applications.
What Teams Built
Participating teams presented their working prototypes during high-stakes, three-minute pitches to a panel of judges, technical mentors, and ecosystem operators. Pitch evaluations looked beyond code quality, examining product strategy, scalability, user experience, and overall business viability.
Deployed Applications
Every Cohort 2 project was built on Avalanche’s C-Chain, leveraging its EVM compatibility, sub-second transaction finality, and near-zero gas fees. This infrastructure enabled teams to build and deploy applications with fast transaction processing and low transaction costs.
Cohort Winners
1st Place: Aura Health
An AI-powered wellness platform that gamifies personal health habits. Aura Health utilizes Avalanche smart contracts to execute instant, low-cost micro-token payouts whenever users hit their daily wellness goals.
2nd Place: UbuTangaza
A decentralized marketing protocol offering a transparent, trustless alternative to traditional influencer channels. The platform uses Avalanche to verify word-of-mouth referrals onchain and disburse automated payouts instantly with minimal gas overhead.
Cohort Projects
Saka: Redesigning house hunting in Nairobi by deploying Avalanche-backed escrow security deposits tied to verifiable, tamper-proof tenant reputation scores.
State Pass: An event management protocol tackling attendee no-shows through fast, high-frequency smart contract deposits and sponsor engagement bounties.
Skill Forge: An educational platform issuing verifiable achievement credentials and certificates as low-cost Avalanche NFTs upon quiz completion.
Loyalty Program: A plug-and-play gamified protocol for retail merchants that issues custom ERC-20 loyalty tokens directly onchain without requiring shoppers to download an app.
Jenga XP: An event engagement tool minting portable soulbound tokens (SBTs) on Avalanche, transforming physical event attendance into verifiable reputation profiles.
Team Pike: An augmented reality (AR) quest system replacing physical paper punch cards with frictionless, onchain brand interactions.
From Prototypes to Sustainable Ventures
To support the long-term sustainability of products developed through the programme, three key infrastructure areas were identified:
Payment Rails & Stablecoins: Solutions for cross-border payments, settlement, and real-time liquidity.
Compliance & KYC: Identity verification and onboarding processes that help meet regulatory requirements while reducing friction for users.
Financial Infrastructure: Off-ramps and liquidity solutions that connect Web3 applications with traditional financial systems and real-world commerce.
